a scene that I just worked on, welcome for feedback

Post by lam giang » 08 Feb 2018, 19:50

Hello guys!

I haven't post anything on forum for awhile and want to share the scene that I just finished. I still rely photoshop to do my painting and TVPaint for animation. Here is a breakdown of the scene (see attachments) :). I used photoshop filter to generate water ripples and have them loop. Smoke, water reflection, waves are animated in TVP.
If you have a better way or different way of approaching this scene please share with me, thanks!

Share and learn,

Lam Giang

It's pretty good !

The only thing that bothers me is that the reflexion of the boat is not affected by the waves.
Maybe it's possible to apply one of TVPaint's distorsions ?
I never tried them but I guess they can do the trick.

Another lovely scene, Lam. Your pieces are very....peaceful :)

I can't be sure but there doesn't seem to be much modification of the smoke particle effect. There is an old tutorial on this site that demonstrates how to make it look more "cartoony", The FX Stack - Create a cartoon smoke [advanced] - https://www.tvpaint.com/v2/content/arti ... eo=4#video. With a little adjustment the smoke might blend in better with the style of all the other elements in the scene. Might be worth experimenting. But if not, the scene looks great as is.

At first I did not see any animation (the GIF) , only the still image . Then I realized there was a broken image link that was not showing up .
Right-clicked on it to try to open it in another tab, but my browser security settings are blocking Giphy.com because of the site's security certificate being out of date.

Is it possible to re-upload the GIF file as an attachment ?

Thanks guys, always good to listen to all of your feedback!

@ DenX: I will try distorting the boat reflection. It bothers me a lot now.

@ Benjamin Cerbai: You are welcome!

@ Cardin Collins: About the smoke, I got the same feedback from my coworker making it more "cartoony". I will check out the tutorial link to learn more about it. For now, not sure I will change it because I had couple smoke scenes before this one in the short. I will wait after I have everything down and make a final call :). Plus, I like your Underwater Caustic Effects with Perlin Noise sample, very helpful.

@ D.T. Nethery: Yes, I am gone upload a gif as attachment (let me know if you can see it), thanks!

Yes, I can see it now ! Thanks. It looks very good.

I agree with Cardin's comment about the smoke/steam effect . A bit more stylized version of smoke would fit the scene better.

Also, I wonder if perhaps the large water ripple is a little over-active ? ... seems like you may want to put
in some more inbetweens to smooth out the action ... is currently on 4's ? I think more inbetweens and exposed on 2's would look better.

(arrows in screen shot below point to the area that is catching my eye)

But overall this looks good to me .

:D glad you can see it and taken your time to give feedback!
About the yellow water on the right side of the scene. They are on 4s and 6s. I had them on previous scene and reuse them here to keep it consistent. Agree, it is very active and need some refinement. I will share it when I have an other update :)
