Batch Folder Import

Post by cgmodeler » 30 Apr 2018, 01:44

Is there a way or script to batch import sequences into TVPAINT (preload them too) and split them on clips based on their source folder or name?

I know this is pretty specific but for the current workflow that we have at the studio its very time consuming importing each sequence of images by hand plus the time that TVPAINT takes to preload them.

We have 70 Shots divided on folders, named C01, C02, C03, etc..
Each folder has a png sequence with the same naming C01_A_001 (SHOT_CHARACTER_FRAME) therefore from SHOT infers that is a different clip, from CHARACTER that is on another layer and FRAME)

Can anybody point me on the right direction on how to do this possible?, on After Effects there's a script called "Inmigration" that allows batch import from folders. https://vimeo.com/7427475

I think a tool like this could be extremely useful. Thanks in advance!

I think the only way to do it is to script it, I'm not sure something like that exists already but should'nt be too hard to do.

You can also try to import without preloading, should be quicker, then import dependencies. Should save you some back and forth maybe, with the loading only at the end?

Why do you need multiple clips in tvpaint? Are you editing with it?

Thanks for the reply Nathan,

I tried the non preloading method but since I need TVPAINT to recompute exposures due the fact that I'm working on finished frames of modulated animation therefore some poses are 3's 4's or even 6's frames or holds, therefore i need to preload the files since TVPAINT won't recompute without preloading.

I'm testing a new workflow with TVPAINT and 3D Animation so its a mix of compositing, editing, finishing on it, pretty much like what Hisko did with Junkyard, you can see that all our animation is 3D/2D https://vimeo.com/cocoalopez

Could you point me out on what to do to script it? It'll be super helpful :)

Can't you recompute after loading dependencies on non-preloaded animation? That was my suggestion

nice work btw :)

Thank Nathan, yes I tried that too, but at the end is the same, since you have to drag each clip/file every time, so on a sequence with about 100 shots, it's a repetitive task. Are there any glossary of functions or dictionary of the tvpaint functions? i was looking at the tutorials for george scripts but couldn't find a reference. Maybe i was looking on the wrong part
